What are Dolch Words
In the 1930’s Dr. Edward Dolch identified 220 words that are the most common words found in children’s books.(Reference) When the complete Dolch list is separated by Grade, you end up with 46 words in the Dolch Grade 2 word list. (Reference)
Many of the words can be sounded out – they are decodable – but many of the words on the Dolch list don’t follow typical phonics rules (think “would” or “because”). (Reference)
Students need to recognize the words instantly, “by sight,” to build reading fluency. Playing word bingo helps expose the students to these words so they read them over and over.
The Perfect Game: Why a 4×4 Bingo Grid Works for Grade 2
While a 5×5 bingo card might seem standard, we recommend a 4×4 grid (16 words) for Grade 2 Dolch words. Here’s why:
- Less Overwhelming: 16 words on a card feels less intimidating than 25, especially for developing readers.
- Faster Wins: Shorter rows mean students get a “BINGO!” more quickly, keeping their engagement and excitement levels high.
- Targeted Practice: With a smaller list, each student gets more chances to find and identify their sight words during the game.

The complete Dolch second grade list is 46 words, and since only 16 words appear on a 4×4 grid, we have separated the list into two parts.
