Bossy R “OR” Word List: R-Controlled Vowel Practice for Grades 2–3

R-controlled vowels are an important phonics skill taught in early elementary grades. When the letter R follows a vowel, it changes how the vowel sounds.

In “or” words, the letter O does NOT make its usual short or long vowel sound. Instead, it is controlled by the R and makes the /or/ sound, as heard in words like for, corn, and storm. The “R” bosses the “O” into making a different sound, so that is why some classrooms call this the “Bossy R”.

Since this sound does not follow typical short or long vowel rules students often need extra practice with it.

Helping students recognize the “or” sound allows them to decode many new words with confidence. Using a game like spelling bingo gives Grade 2 and Grade 3 students repeated exposure to this pattern in a fun, low-pressure way.
