The “ai” vowel team is one way students learn to spell the long A sound, where the letter A says its name. When the letters a and i work together in a word, they usually “team up” to make the long A sound, like in rain, mail, and tail.

This spelling pattern is commonly taught as students move beyond short vowels and begin reading and spelling longer words. Practicing “ai” words helps build reading fluency, spelling confidence, and word recognition.
Using games like spelling bingo gives students repeated exposure to the pattern in a fun, low-pressure way.
Playing bingo in the classroom with words instead of numbers is really catching on!
