Long “A” Vowel Sound – CVCe Words for Grades 1 and 2

Long “A” CVCe words are an important early reading step after short vowel practice. These are words where the vowel says its name because of the silent e at the end. Some teachers call this CVCe pattern the “Magic E” or “Silent E”.

Long "A" Sound - CVCe words

(If you’re a parent reading this, the “CVC” part of this stands for “Consonant, Vowel, Consonant”, and the silent “e” at the end is usually written as lower case. CVCe)

Words like cake, make, and name are common examples that help young readers start to notice important spelling patterns.

Once children begin to recognize the a_e pattern, they can use it to decode new words more easily and build confidence with reading.

This word list is for Grades 1 and 2 can be used for small group reading, spelling practice, literacy centers, phonics review, homework, or simple games at home.

Why these words are helpful for early readers

These words are useful because they are short, decodable, and follow a pattern students can learn to spot.

Instead of memorizing every word one by one, children can start to notice that when they see a-consonant-e, the vowel usually says the long A sound.

👉 That kind of pattern recognition helps with both reading and spelling.

A child who can read cake may have an easier time reading lake, make, and rake. This helps build fluency and gives students more success with unfamiliar words.

If you want a fun way to practice these words, word bingo can work really well.

Many children enjoy it because it feels more like a game than a worksheet, but they are still getting repeated exposure to the same reading pattern.

I have used our free tool at EasyBingoCreator.com to create 35 unique cards with a 5×5 grid that you are welcome to use in your classroom.

What do the “Bingo Calling Cards” look like?

When you make bingo cards using our bingo card maker, the last pages of the PDF contain the “calling cards”.

✂️ These are what you cut out and start randomly calling out to your students.

🧠 And some clever teachers have been using these calling cards as FLASHCARDS too! ⚡️

🚨 Attention Teachers – is this too much for your students?

👉 You know your students best.

If you think your students will lose focus on a longer bingo game like the 5×5 grid that I created…

You can easily make your own bingo cards that have a 4×4 grid or 3×3 using our free bingo card generator.

The picture below is a screenshot of the tool showing you where the grid size selector is.

I suggest that you use a smaller number of words if you’re using a 4×4 or 3×3 grid.

And you can do that by just copying some of the words above and pasting them into the bingo card maker. 👇

Ways teachers and parents can use this list

Teachers can use these words during phonics lessons, morning work, literacy centers, reading intervention, or partner games.

Parents can use them for quick practice at home by reading the words aloud, covering the silent e and asking what changes, or using the bingo card “calling cards” as flashcards.

You could also ask children to:

  • read each word aloud
  • circle the silent e
  • underline the vowel that says its name
  • sort the words by beginning sound
  • write a sentence using a few of the words

These simple activities help reinforce the spelling pattern without making practice feel too heavy.
