Teachers and parents looking for fun phonics activities can use this list of Long “A” sound “AY” vowel team words to create fun classroom bingo games.
Word bingo games can help students recognize spelling patterns while keeping them actively involved in the lesson.
Simply copy the list of words below and paste them into the free bingo card generator at EasyBingoCreator to quickly create printable word bingo cards for your students.

The AY vowel team is commonly found at the end of words and makes the long “A” sound, like in day or play.
Grade 1 “AY” Words
These shorter words are often appropriate for Grade 1 students who are learning vowel teams and practicing simple phonics patterns.
day, say, may, lay, pay, way, bay, ray, hay, play, stay
Teachers working with younger learners may prefer to use a 3×3 bingo grid when using these simpler words.
Grade 2–3 “AY” Vowel Team Words
These slightly longer words introduce more complex spelling patterns and are often appropriate for Grades 2–3 students.
clay, gray, tray, fray, pray, spray, stray, away, today, delay, relay, sway, display, birthday, holiday
These words work well with 4×4 or 5×5 bingo cards depending on the reading level of the class, but you’ll need to incorporate more words to fill out the larger grids. Don’t worry, you can copy the “Big List” below. 👇
(👉 Note for 🇨🇦 Canadian Teachers: you may want to omit “gray” since the colour is usually spelled “grey” in Canada.)

Using the Bingo Calling Cards as Flashcards
When you generate bingo cards using EasyBingoCreator, the printable PDF also includes a set of calling cards used to announce the words during the game.
👉 These calling cards can also be used as phonics flashcards for additional learning activities. ⚡️
For example, teachers can:
- Hold up a card and ask students to read the word aloud
- Have students identify the AY vowel team in each word
- Use the cards for quick spelling review
- Ask students to use the word in a sentence
- If it’s a compound word, ask the students to break it up into its smaller words
This allows the same set of materials to be used for multiple phonics activities, not just bingo.

Choosing the Right Bingo Grid Size for Your Students
EasyBingoCreator allows teachers to choose different bingo grid sizes depending on the age and ability level of their students. Below is a sample preview of what each grid size looks like when you make it using EasyBingoCreator.com
3×3 Grid (9 spaces)
A good choice for Kindergarten and Grade 1 students. Teachers may want to use shorter words such as day, may, say, play, and pay.
Below is a sample bingo card I created to show you what a 3×3 word bingo card will look like if you use our bingo card generator.

4×4 Grid (16 spaces)
Works well for Grades 1–3 and provides a slightly longer game while still keeping things manageable for younger readers.
Below is a sample 4×4 grid bingo card I made so you can see what it would look like when you create your own word bingo cards.

5×5 Grid (24 spaces plus the “Free Space” in the middle)
Ideal for Grades 2–5, where students can handle a larger variety of words and enjoy a longer bingo game. ⏳
Most of the word lists on this site include 30 or more words, giving teachers plenty of variety when generating multiple bingo cards.
